Rangwe Girls'Secondary School is a public school registered with the Ministry of Education in Kenya. It was initiated by the local communinity after they saw the need of having a girls'school locally, since there was no local girls'school given that Asumbi Girls'had been uplifted to national status and could no longer serve the community's interest. The nearest Girls'school now is St. Mary's Kachar Girls'Secondary which is 20 kilometres away. Rangwe Girls' is situated in Homa bay County, Rangwe Sub County, Rangwe Division, East gem Location in Koyolo Sub Location and is about 200 metres to the right off the Rangwe-Oyugis road. The communinity came to realization that there was a high drop out of girls in the mixed secondary schools around, due to early pregnancies resulting into early marriages. A pure girls'school was seen as a solution to this endemic problem. Rangwe Girls'Secondary School is a public secondary school with a strong Christian base. It is sponsored by the Seventh Day Adventist Church and operates on biblical values. These include love, respect, self-control, justice, and fear of God. Rangwe Girls' Secondary School offers the Secondary School Curriculum of the 8-4-4 system of education. The school currently has a total population of 535 students, 22 teachers, where 12 teachers are posted by the Teachers'Service Commission and the other 10 teachers are employed by the Board of Management. The School has 12 support staff and lies on a 3.58 acres of land. It is surrounded a very supportive local community. Rangwe Girls had an initial registration as a single stream girls'day Secondary School, but with the introduction of the boarding facility the school has had an an upsurge of students from 46 in 2012 to 420 in 2021 and is under re-registration as a double stream Girls'boarding/day Secondary School although form one 2021 has had three streams. The School's postal address is 24 40303. Rangwe Girls's is a home to 535 girls. Most of these girls are vulnerable given their humble backgrouds. Rangwe Girls'is at the forefront of ensuring that girls enroll and stay in school and thus helps girls gain access to or create new educational, financial, and social resources in their communities. the school's inspiration is to help girls improve their own lives, the lives of the their families and the conditions in their communinities when they become women. The School has adopted the Re-Entry policy and has seen the first beneficiries leave with very good grades. The most important dream for parents and especially mothers is ensuring their daughters have access to basic education, are able to make informed decisions about their futures, and are able to protect themselves from trafficking, sexual exploitation, HIV and AIDS, early pregnancies and early marriages among other problems. By improving access to educational opportunities, Rangwe Girls'Secondary in partnership with Rangwe Sub County Health team, FAWE - K (Imarisha Mschana), Volunteer Space, APHIA Nyanza amongst other parteners have helped girls develop skills that allow them to make decisions and influence commmunity change in key areas. This has had positive impact by reducing HIV and AIDS among girls, reduction of early pregnancy rates, reduction of early marriages, reduction of gender based violence, increase in transition rate in from primary to secondary, increased access and retention rates, enhanced peace and security, and has helped reduce the gap between the rich and the poor in Kenya. Education also helps men and women claim their rights and realize their potential in the economic, political and social arenas. It is alo the single most powerful way to lift people out of poverty. Education plays particularly importantrole as a foundation for girls'development towards adult life. It should be an intrinsic part of any development to address the gender-based discrimination against the girl child that remains prevalent innmany societies. Though the governemnt of Kenya has made significant steps to reduce gender parity in education, gender inequality in education is still rampant particularly in the rural and marginalized areas. Studies indicate that girls are less likely to access school, remain in school or to cachieve high standards of performance in examinations than boys due to socia-cultural barriers. Rangwe Girls'endeavor to bribge these gaps by empowering the girls child who for a long time in the rural set up, was not given priority in the family in terms of educational support.
The government's Free Secondary Education programme launched in 2008 dramatically increased access for girls from low-income families. By 2010, Rangwe Girls' had a student population exceeding 600, a guidance and counselling department, and a fully equipped home science laboratory. A new administration block was completed in 2012, a modern dining hall in 2014, and upgraded dormitory facilities between 2015 and 2017. The school posted a mean grade of B in 2016 — its highest at the time — and received national recognition for improvement in mathematics and sciences.
Between 2018 and 2025, Rangwe Girls' has undergone its most transformative phase of growth. Current enrolment stands at 1,000 students, supported by 30 teaching staff and 24 non-teaching staff. A state-of-the-art ICT and resource centre opened in 2020. Solar energy panels installed in 2021 made the school largely energy self-sufficient. In 2023, the STEM Girls Initiative was launched, contributing directly to the school's best-ever KCSE mean score of B+ (67.4) in 2025. Today, the school stands as a beacon of possibility — proof that with the right investment in a girl's education, communities and nations are transformed for generations to come.
The school management through its prudential use of MIF has built a new state-of-the art tuition block which will house Grades 10 to 12. It's milestone and a great achievement overseen by Madam Grace Atieno, BOM, MIF and other development partners.
